This drum lesson breaks down the drum part for Dave Brubeck's classic track 'Take Five'.

It features the innovative drumming of Joe Morello who weaves several elements together to create one of my favourite jazz grooves.

But this isn't just any jazz groove because the Dave Brubeck band were innovators of their time pushing ahead with oddtime concepts that were groundbreaking at the time.

This beat is tough and uses all four limbs with a cheeky foot ostinato. It also features some tricky dynamics and of course that odd time element.

And if you want to take it even further you can try soloing over the five four foot ostinato just as he does in the live recordings you can find.

In this lesson you get the full video breakdown, sheet music and an MP3 practice track.
